When Beth called her mother the next day, she didn’t sound good.

“There’s something wrong with me, Beth. I can’t stop crying. If I hear children singing somewhere, I cry. If I see a bird fly across the yard, I cry. And forget sappy commercials that have puppies in them or young men coming home from the war.”

“I thought you were going to the doctor.”

“I did. He says I need some medication to calm me.”

“Really.”

“Can you believe that? I told him that was ridiculous, and I came home and mowed the lawn. But I could barely see to mow.”

“Mom, if he says you need medication, maybe you do.”

“Oh, Beth, it’s such a slippery slope, I just hate to get started. I’ve always prided myself on my positive outlook.”

“But, Mom, it’s completely normal for people to take medication after a trauma.”

“We’ll see, Beth.”
